When analyzing the idea of the remix, the idea of a character archetype spoke most to me in the sense that characteristics of a certain character are subject to change due to revisions in modern society. The concept of a person having a set of predetermined personality traits is both timeless and always changing. For instance, the seductress/adulteress is an archetype that is prevalent from literature to modern day television shows. Starting with a flashback to ancient Greek literature, the Siren is an example of a seductress who attract sailors to an early death from a sunken ship with their mesmerizing voices. Another, more modern, example of the adulteress/seductress is Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina. Here, the adulteress is a woman of influence, married to a successful man, in love with another man. This differs in that, through this affair, Anna loses her position of power and influence over Russian aristocratic society. A final example of the seductress is the modern day television series: Scandal. Here a woman of power, Olivia Pope, has an affair with a man of great importance: the president of the United States. A converse to Tolstoy’s Anna, Olivia gains more power through her affair with the president. These three examples, if taken from different angles, can exhibit the subjugation of women through the oppression of marital rights and freedoms. From another angle however, the characters themselves could be analyzed through a historical lens, taking into account, the time period in which each story was written and the circumstances that were a part of the character development. Beyond that, the archetype itself can be traced to determine why or under what circumstances the seductress/adulteress archetype came to rise.
