Multimodality is almost like an assemblage but it is an
assemblage of one idea in different modes. This finished product would have a
purpose and an audience. The way that things are arranged within this
multimodality would contribute to the communication of this one idea
specifically for the purpose and audience. Modes would be interchangeable with
other terms that we have spoken about in class like texts and media. Modes are
just the different methods by which to present something. Examples of modes would
be things like video, images, written text, etc.
Most of the
tension revolving Wysocki and Kress’ interpretation of multimodality have to do
with how they differ on opinions concerning space and time and how the origins
of these affect what is happening now. Wysocki makes it a point to show how the
spatial arrangement of words has changed over time and how now that spaces
between words is given shows how written texts can be spatial and temporal in
nature, he also shows how images can be temporal especially when thinking about
the context in which it originated, unlike Kress who shows images as just
relating to space and written texts as just relating to time. Wysocki looks much more in depth to specific
uses of text while Kress focuses more on how things are arranged a certain way because
some things are spatial and temporal respectively. Because of this the mode
being used communicates best its purpose to its intended audience, which is the
whole purpose if using multimodality.
