Genre is a system of categorizing multimodality.
Multimodality refers to the mediums by which we communicate messages. Take
music for example. Music serves as a way for artist to express themselves with
the help of many modes put together. Within music there comes a wide variety of
sounds that get grouped together to form genres. Genres help us classify works
that are alike, grouping them together for easy understanding. Genres usually
share similar characters of composition.
Music genres alone are always evolving. Music is said to
have originated in Africa some 50,000 years ago. Depending on the culture,
language, and technology available, groups of people experience music
differently. The modes used to make
music also vary from region to region. In Africa, there is limited access to
instruments and technology to produce the music that is heard in modern day
United States.
With the growing evolution of technology, producers today
turn to computer software to make their music. Electronic Dance Music, commonly
referred to as EDM, is a genre that has captured an increased fan base in the
last decade. With the creation of songs from upbeat tunes and positive messages,
this genre lures in a unique following. Music festivals attract fans from
hundreds of miles away, inviting people with a thirst for loud bass. However,
there is a stereotype for people who enjoy this type of music. Because the
music is so upbeat and energizing, the crowd feels the necessity to incorporate
the way this music makes them feel into the way they dress. At events like
these you can find people who make you happy and will definitely brighten your
day.
