Multimodality

Multimodality is a way of communication that is based on different modes that are combined together to create a meaning to the audience through images and text. The modes, in relation to the article, are the ways in which you arrange the text and visual images in order to relay the message that you are hoping to get across. The organization of these modes are what makes a multimodality come together. In the video, Kress describes modes as the layout that is being used on such things as a website. He describes the image as being on the left hand side and the text being on the right. He goes on to further explain how if these two modes were switched or rearranged that some people may find it weird and not understandable. This being an example of how modes are essential in getting a message across. In contrast, Wysocki see’s modes as a not just one thing but various things. These things all applying to what the multimodality is trying to convey. He does not agree with Kress when he states that all objects rely on images and texts and he believes that thinking that way is only straining the full potential of modes.
