Generally this article is speaking about genres and how they influence the perception of audiences in correlation with media. What does this mean? Well as the article states in Working Within Genre, many experiments were conducted to see how peoples different aspects change how the audience selects genres for different medias. All media has a type or general genre they can be listed under, however, within that there can be many sub-genres that either everybody acknowledges or a small group of individuals assume. The importance that is explained in this article is how are these genres analyzed by the individual? Many factors come into play according to David Morley, David Buckingham, and Leona Jaglom and Howard Gardner. Jaglom and Gardner tested young children to see how age might affect how people select genres for a media. On the other hand Buckingham tested a bit older children ranging from age 8-12. He noted that these children used notions of genres for their television programs. I enjoyed reading about Buckinghams experiment with the cards to see how children would generalize their most recently viewed television shows.  Morley however, took a different approach analyzing how social class might influence genre selection.

Daniel Chandler then takes time to note the different "textual properties" of genres stated by television theorists. Many of these textual properties just seem like literary elements when writing a piece. These include setting, character development, and as stated the two that are more difficult to correlate, mood and tone. A film or media can be defined by which element is seen first or more important to the actual plot of the story. For example, on film could be defined by the subject while another similar film could be defined by the setting.

In essence each mode is material used to create a media. Modes almost always are setting up the movie in a specific genre. For example, characters and settings usually setting up the general plot of the story are what essentially give the movie its genre. This includes elements such as a dark eerie setting depicting a horror movie.
