According to Hodge and Kress, "genres are typical forms of texts which link kinds of producer, consumer, topic, medium, manner and occasion". Multi-modiality similarly works with different interfaces coming together to effectively communicate what one wants to say. Genres are used to categorize information to improve the efficiency of communication, much like how multi-modiality uses multiple devices to communicate with others. Genre has many parts to it, thus one would have to gather many details about a piece to categorize it. Multi-modiality does not have one mean to effectively communicate what the person wants to say rather the modes come together to produce the meaning.
I found the idea of the schema interesting because the use of genre of texts makes sense in everyday experiences or the typical texts found when reading. "Any text requires what is sometimes called 'cultural capital' on the part of its audience to make sense of it" relates to the cultural biases in communication of modes like hand signals, idioms, cultural norms like body language meaning or personal space. The experiment with the children illustrates the point humans often categorize things since we find meaning in categorization and it is learned from an early age. There are certain expectations with certain genres such as romance would most likely involve a couple and there would be interesting accounts of feelings for one another. The expectations might contribute to the meaning or purpose of the text while others argue limit the creativity or possibilities of the author to expand on their writing.
