We as humans have a tendency to categorize everything we do, read, and see.  We tend to do it in order to feel a sense of comfort and understanding. We unconsciously categorize the content provided in the text and correlate it to previous moments in which the information was similar.  In the instance of texts, we categorize it into what we call genres.  The artistic composition is grouped together due to their similarities in form, style and subject matter.  Multimodality is a theory on communication that bases it self on the unity of different modes in order to create a meaning to the audience through text and visual layouts.  Genres in a way are modes because they help set up the concept and general idea of the text.  They give the initial understanding to the whole text. Different modes can be placed in different order to create a specific genre, for example when talking about a horror film, you need modes like scary looking people, a dim and unknown environment, and dark and intense music. The modes connect to make a multimodality type of film and the film fits into a general genre that fits a specific audience.

You would not expect genre and multimodality to be so closely related, but they have strong similarities.  The basic concept of both is that genres are placed to please a specified audience that is already determined to comprehend the information while multimodality created to reach a special audience with the use of modes.
